La loca en el muelle de San Blas

Esta historia de amor nació en 1971 en el puerto de San Blas, 

Nayarit cuando la jovencita Rebeca, quien trabajaba en un restaurante cerca del muelle, 

se enamoró de un marinero extranjero, quien proveniente del mar arribó al muelle para marcar 

la vida de Rebeca y una de las leyendas más conocidas de México.

Se encuentran en las zonas tropicales de ASIA Y AFRICA .

Ever since the nexus for the outbreak of COVID-19 was traced back to a wet market in Hubei province, the search has been on to determine the virus's heritage. Initial studies of SARS-CoV-2's genome suggest it's highly possible that the virus emerged in a colony of horseshoe bats in Yunnan, a province that borders the south-east Asian country of Myanmar.

But if that is the case, it's hard to imagine how a bat became a source of infection in a densely populated city more than 1,000 kilometres to the north of its colony.

Granted, stalls in these Chinese wet markets sell a wide variety of live animals for food and traditional medicine, many of them sourced from Asia's tropics. Whether bats of any kind might have been present isn't clear, since the market was cleared long before the first indications of an outbreak were known.

Unlike horseshoe bats, though, the pangolin is almost guaranteed to have been on sale there.

The illicit sale of the endangered mammal - prized as a delicacy and a health tonic - is an 'open secret' throughout much of the nation, and a good place to start hunting for an intermediate host of the zoonotic virus currently wreaking havoc across the globe.

Frozen tissues from 18 Malayan pangolins (Manis javanica) were obtained from anti-smuggling operations carried out by Guangxi Customs during 2017 and early 2018.

Coronavirus RNA was found in six of the 43 organ samples, linking the virus with five individual animals. Techniques for reading and filling in missing sequences soon provided the team with half a dozen detailed genomes of the pangolin's strains of the virus.

None were dead ringers for SARS-CoV-2, but there were a number of overlapping sequences that suggest these viruses were fairly closely related.

A second hunt through another batch of pangolin tissues taken from an operation later in 2018 followed, based on the newly acquired genomes. This analysis revealed a further three positive results out of 12 animals.

In addition to these specimens from the Guangxi operation, the team analysed pangolin scales, skin swabs, and unspecified tissues from a separate customs centre in Guangzhou, picked up in early 2019.

Taken together, the mix of newly sequenced coronavirus genomes are all 85.5 to 92.4 percent similar to SARS-CoV-2, and represent two lines of related virus. One of those lines even has a 'haircut' that resembles that of the COVID-19 virus, with remarkably similar receptor-binding spikes jutting from their surfaces.

The results might not be the smoking gun we're hoping for, as the search for the connection between the coronavirus's reservoir and the first humans to be infected continues.

Still, it's a wake-up call we desperately need. All those animals seized by customs were destined for live animal markets somewhere in China.

As impossible as it is to predict whether those particular lines of coronavirus could have made a leap into the human population, the current pandemic emerged from just such a branch of that family tree.

The sale of pangolins in China is already far from legal, but without the political will to provide the resources necessary to enforce the law, their sale will almost certainly continue to flourish, in spite of recent widespread bans of the sale and distribution of wild meats.

A global pandemic is a tragic incentive to act. But with mounting evidence that pangolins play a strong role in the ecology of such a potential threat, perhaps it's the push China needs to finally get a handle on its illegal animal trade.

La Magia de la Vida

De niña aprendí que la vida tiene magia y misterios. 

Aprendí que más allá de lo que podemos disponer, razonar o saber, 

hay cosas que nos sorprenden,

que no entendemos y está bien que así sea.

A Pedro siempre le había gustado la magia. 

De pequeño tenía fascinación por los trucos que hacían los magos, 

esos trucos que nadie puede explicar, aquellos que nos dejan boquiabiertos, 

que nos hacen pensar que la magia existe realmente.

Pedro admiraba especialmente a un mago famoso en su niñez, 

de gran prestigio. 

Un hombre que acompañaba cada acto de magia con una bella historia, 

relatada en forma pausada, casi profunda y con una cadencia en su voz 

que era una verdadera caricia.

El niño lo miraba, lo estudiaba, grababa sus presentaciones en televisión 

y podía ver sus espectáculos más de una vez. 

Para Pedro ese mago era una persona especial, 

era quien le hacía creer que lo imposible podía verse y hasta tocarse.

Luego de una de las tantas funciones a las que Pedro asistió con sus padres, 

insistió en conocer en persona al gran mago. 

En el teatro ya conocían al niño y hasta el mago había escuchado hablar de él, 

no fue difícil que lo recibiera.

-Enséñame alguno de tus trucos por favor-pidió el pequeño.

Al mago no le sorprendió el pedido, 

era común que la gente quisiera saber cómo hacía lo que hacía. 

Y, aunque jamás revelaba sus secretos, esa vez y por ese niño, 

hizo una excepción.

-¿Qué truco quieres que te enseñe?-preguntó
el gran mago.
-El de las cartas y las copas-contestó el pequeño.

-Así será-contestó el mago y Pedro creyó tocar el cielo con las manos 

¡Por fin algún misterio sería develado! 

¡Por fin sabría cómo hacía ese hombre para sorprender a todo el mundo!

Con mucha paciencia,
el mago explicó paso a paso el truco.

Con detalle, tomándose todo el tiempo del mundo para que al niño 

no le quedase duda alguna de cómo se realizaba.

Cuando el mago terminó,
una profunda decepción se apoderó de Pedro.
Una sensación inesperada lo invadió,
algo parecido a desilusión y tristeza.
Pedro no tocó el cielo con sus manos cuando
el truco fue desmenuzado ante sus ojos.
El pequeño no entendía qué le pasaba,
había logrado su sueño, había conocido al mago,
éste le había enseñado uno de sus mejores trucos y aún así no se sentía feliz.
Sus padres tampoco entendieron su actitud,
pero el mago sí porque si alguien sabía de magia,
ése era él.
Pedro pasó un tiempo sin querer saber de magia
y del mago, hasta que un día volvió a ver
al que fuera su ídolo en la televisión.
El niño volvió a quedarse mudo,

absorto ante el espectáculo que ese hombre daba. 

Maravillado porque no entendía cómo hacía lo que hacía 

y recién ahí tomó conciencia de algo fundamental y en ese momento entendió.

La verdadera magia radicaba en sorprenderse,
en no entender y más aún en no conocer el truco.

La magia estaba en pensar que lo imposible por un instante era real, 

estaba en maravillarse,

en no poder cerrar los ojos para no perder
ese pequeño milagro que no está sucediendo.
Entendió que haber querido conocer el truco,

había convertido ese acto de magia en un acto común, ordinario, 

una simple demostración de cómo un hombre puede realizar su trabajo 

y ciertamente no era eso lo que Pedro consideraba magia, y no lo era sin dudas.

El pequeño aprendió algo que jamás olvidaría,
algo que hizo más bella su vida y lo sigue haciendo
hoy que es un hombre.

Pedro comprendió con el corazón, que es como mejor se comprende, 

que la vida necesita siempre algo de magia, necesita abrir sorprendida sus ojos,

no entender, maravillarse, no tener explicación.
Que hay cosas que son más bellas si no se entienden, si conservan su misterio.

Porque sin magia, del tipo que ésta sea, 

la vida se convierte en un libreto ya estudiado, en una historia sabida de memoria.

Desde ese día Pedro deja que algunas cosas lo sorprendan y no les pide explicación,
